Plate 02 of 04

The coat leaves the wall and holds its own shadow.

Look 02. Black wool, double-breasted, the sleeves cut full. Closed with one hook at the waist.

A model wears a long black double-breasted wool coat with full sleeves, her shadow cast on the lit wall behind her.
A dressmaker adjusts a beige wrap dress on a mannequin in a daylit studio, work surfaces behind her.

The Atelier

The making, unhidden.

There is a room on the courtyard side where the issue is actually made. Bolt rolls stand open against the wall; a coat waits on the stand with one sleeve basted. Most houses sketch first. Here the drape comes first: cloth on a stand, a hand at the shoulder, the mirror walked around twice before anything is cut.

Issue 07 kept the method and narrowed the means. Three looks, one detail, two fabrics. The wool was cut on the bias so the coat moves a half-second after the body. The silk was washed twice so it falls without help. Nothing was added to hide a seam; where a seam shows, it was pressed to be seen.

The plates were photographed in the house, in the last hour of working light. What you see is the room’s own finish: chalk dust, a burned thread, gold kept small.
